Payless relaunches with website, plans to open hundreds of stores

Good news, shoe lovers!

Payless ShoeSource closed its final stores in the U.S. in June 2019 after filing for bankruptcy, but the shoe retailer announced Tuesday it is returning.

“Today, Payless, the footwear retailer with a 60+ year heritage, is excited to announce its relaunch into the North American market, unveiling an immersive Ecommerce platform and new brick-and-mortar retail concept stores,” the company announced in a press release.

As of Tuesday, Payless.com was live, with a message saying “Payless is back” on its main page.

 (CNN) — After filing for bankruptcy protection for the second time and shutting all of its 2,100 stores in the US last year, discount shoe chain Payless is attempting a comeback.

The retailer said it’s planning to open 300 to 400 standalone stores nationwide in the next three to five years. The company, which sells sneakers, boots and dress shoes at prices as low as around $10 a pair, thinks it’s a good time to attract budget conscious shoppers.

Payless emerges from bankruptcy with comeback plan to reopen stores

Payless ShoeSource — once America’s most ubiquitous discount shoe retailer — is planning a comeback.

The budget chain is emerging from bankruptcy protection on Thursday with plans to reopen some of the 2,100 stores that it had shuttered last year in the US.

Known for its affordable shoes, boots, sandals and accessories, Payless execs declined to say how many stores it might open in the US, where it once operated as many as 2,500 stores.

But this will be the second time the 64-year-old brand from Topeka, Kan., seeks to reinvent itself after a financial disaster.
