Update, Friday, June 12: The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the man killed Thursday as 23-year-old Trai Terrell.
A man who was shot inside a northeast-side mall on Thursday evening has died of his injuries, police said.
Just before 6 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers patrolling in the area heard shots fired inside the Castleton Square mall at 6020 East 82nd St., an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police spokesperson said.
The shots came from near the entrance on the south side of the mall, near the J.C. Penny store, Officer Genae Cook said.
According to preliminary information, the shooting happened just inside of the mall doors, and the incident then spilled out to the parking lot. It did not happen inside a store.
Officers found a man on the ground and saw people running from the area. The victim was in critical condition, IMPD said.

The man was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of gunshot wounds, IMPD said.
Cook described the victim as a “younger adult male,” but his age is not yet known.
No one else was hurt.
Cook told reporters that the shooting happened right inside the foyer. Police also found shell casings in the parking lot and a vehicle with a busted-out window.
What led to the shooting is unclear, she said. However, she said police believe the shooting was not random and “the individuals involved knew each other.”
She said people were detained for questioning, but she doesn’t yet know how many were questioned and whether they were considered witnesses or suspects. However, she also said police were not actively looking for a suspect.
Investigators recovered multiple weapons at the scene but don’t yet know if the weapons are related to the shooting.
IMPD officers patrol the area as part of a partnership with the mall.
Cook says the mall is still safe for visitors.
“This is an isolated incident that could have happened anywhere,” she said.
Anyone who was in the area from 5:30 p.m. to the approximate time of the shooting —5:43 p.m. — is urged to tell police if they saw something, Cook said.
